What the status codes mean

When we check the links on your page, each one gets a status code. These codes come from the web server and tell us if the link works, redirects, or fails. Here’s what the different groups mean:

  • 200 – OK
The link works as expected. The page loads without issues.
  • 3xx – Redirect
The link points to another address. Redirects are normal if a page has moved, but long redirect chains can slow down visitors and search engines. You should update these links, to link direct to the final target destination.
  • 4xx – Client error
The link leads to a page that cannot be found (like 404 Not Found) or is blocked (like 403 Forbidden). These are broken links and should be fixed or removed.
  • 5xx – Server error
The server had a problem responding. This could be a temporary issue, or a sign that the site linked to is unstable. You should consider replacing these, if this happens a lot.
  • Other / Timeout
The request didn’t return a normal response. This can happen if the site blocks checks, has SSL issues, or takes too long to answer. This might not be a problem. Check manually if they work.

Keeping links clean and error-free improves user experience and helps search engines trust your site. If you find many 4xx or 5xx errors, it’s worth updating or removing those links.
